En Vogue- Hold On

One of my favorite female R&B groups from the 90’s popped up on my Songza this week.

NP: Haim, Days Are Gone (Album)

Haim, from left to right, Danielle, Alana, and Este

This week’s playlist is dedicated to Haim! Well, I maybe cheating because the playlist is practically their whole entire album, Days Are Gone but hey, it’s currently my go to album on Spotify.

Haim consists of Este (eldest, bass), Danielle (middle, lead vocals and guitar), and Alana (youngest, percussion and guitar and everything else). They’re like the girl equivalent of the Hansons but awesomer in a girl-power type of way. They’re music has obvious retro roots to them, very 80s pop when it comes to back up vocals and percussions (a lot of claps and synthesizers) with deep rock and roll vocals from Danielle (this girl can also rip on the guitar). They have awesome music videos with the three sister performing synchronized dance numbers. But my favorite music video would have to go to their single Falling. I just love the whole 70s movies feel, very Wes Anderson and very funny.

Plus they have great hair!

Here are a couple notes on my favorite tracks on the album:

The Wire

The very first Haim song I heard. This one is straight-up classic rock n’ roll and probably the most well-known song in the album. If you guys feel like you’ve heard the song before, it’s probably because you have heard it before or because the intro sounds A LOT like The Eagles’ Heartache Tonight.

If I Could Change Your Mind

This track goes more on the 80s pop side with its jumpy beat, xylophones tones, and lots and lots of handclaps.

Don’t Save Me

One of the funnest tracks to sing! I love the fast, repetitive refrain. This song combines both their rock n’ roll and 80s pop roots starting the song off with rhythmic guitar chords then bringing in the synth/keyboard in the chorus! And of course, lots and lots of claps.

My Song 5

I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SONG! It’s such a badass song! That’s all.

Here’s a Spotify playlist of the album for your listening pleasure:

Twin Forks – Cross My Mind

Twin Forks is a Folk Rock and Americana band started by Chris Carrabba (Dashboard Confessional!) in 2011. I snatched their free downloaded on Purevolume a while back and recently downloaded the rest of their new album . Chris Carrabba is one of my favorite voices since high school. Dashboard Confessional was the majority of my high school soundtrack that I’ve mentioned before in previous posts. Unlike the emo DC, Twin Forks has a country, blue grass upbeat and hopeful sound. I love the blend of Chris and Suzie’s voices and the instruments.  A person is probably less likely to cry listening to them.

About a month or so ago, they announced they will go on Tour with Augustana (“I think I’ll go to Bossstonnnnn”, my fave. I splurged on their downloads too)! I bought tickets of course because I’ve always wanted to see DC live! Man, as long as I see and hear Chris Carrabba live, even with his new cool crew, I’ll be happy. Do artists usually do meet and greets after 9:30 club shows?! I would love to meet them! They are currently on tour with Phillip Phillips but it’s a Canadian Tour with one stop in the US. I would have gone to that too.

I’ll post a review of the May 19th concert. Updates later =)

Bonus video: recent performance of  an old school Dashboard Confessional song! Oooo, great choice for a wedding first dance song! If I witnessed that moment or if they even play this at the concert, I guarantee there will be tears.

[Live Performance] – Bastille – Pompeii (Live At Capitol Studios)

Y’all already know how much I love this song from last summer. The song still hasn’t lost it’s luster for me. I think that’s because it’s didn’t get overplayed at all.

They will be performing here in Maryland at this year’s Sweetlife Festival. If you’re attending, I hope you get to see them!

Bonus: They performed this on SNL last January. It’s interesting how long this song has been out but they only get asked to perform it many months later.
