[Music Video] The Roots – Never (featuring Patty Crash)

Check out their live performance of this song on the Tonight Show. It’s amazing!

I’ve listened to The Roots’ latest album, …and then you shoot your cousin, all the way through at least 10 times now (it’s only around a half-hour long). At first listen, it’s obviously concept-driven and probably their most ambitious project yet. They are pushing the boundaries of what hip hop music is, which is something I’m glad they are doing. The more genres intertwine, I wonder how you can box things into one particular category.

Related: There was a recent news story about the Grammys finally allowing songs with samples and interpolations to be nominated in any songwriting category, not just Best Rap Song. But Grammy Awards are whatever…

Back to the album, I like the album but it’s certainly not something I will want to listen on the regular. The album is an experience at the least. I simply dig their boom bap sound more.

Check out the entire album on Spotify and/or purchase the album on Amazon:

Bonus: Understand featuring Dice Raw & Greg Porn

This currently has the most plays for me from the album. I love the claymation, the song’s hook, and Greg Porn’s verse playing with the religious rhetoric.

People ask for God, ’till the day he comes
See God’s face – turn around and run
God sees the face of a man
Shaking his head, says “he’ll never understand”
People ask for god, ’till the day he comes
See God’s face – turn around and run
God sees the face of a man
Shaking his head then says, “man’ll never understand”
